June 6th: 9 month well child visit

Landen saw Dr. Widelitz for his 9 month well child visit a few days after he turned 9 months.  Things went really well!  There's only 1 area we're going to monitor and see where we're at in 3 months.  Providing he doesn't get sick over the summer, we won't be back to the doctor until Landen is 1!!  Here are the specifics:

  • Weight: 22 lb 11 oz (80th percentile)
  • Height: 30 in (92.5th percentile)
  • Weight to height ratio: 68.5th percentile
  • Head circumference: 47 cm (89.7th percentile)
  • Overall: Landen looks healthy and is developmentally right on track. Dr. Widelitz said he is big for his age but everything is proportionate. He appears to be getting the proper amount of nutrition and his muscles are strong. When John stood Landen up for him, Dr. Widelitz was very impressed with is muscle control and predicted that he would be walking right around his first birthday. Landen got a little nervous when the doctor first came in and started whining. He was fine after a few seconds though and started showing off his babbling skills.
  • Head shape: Landen's head is still a little flattened on one side. Although it's noticeable, the doctor said that there's still plenty of time for it to round out and did not seem concerned.
  • Oral exploration: I mentioned my concern that Landen is a very atypical baby in that he does not put anything in his mouth other than his fingers. After some discussion, Dr. Widelitz seemed a little concerned but we have decided to see how he does over these next few months and revisit the subject when he turns one. We're a little afraid that we may run into issues with self-feeding and drinking. Since Landen willingly takes food from a spoon he doesn't seem to have a total oral aversion, so that's promising. If things don't look good in a few months I believe we'll probably be referred to a therapist, but we'll cross that bridge if we come to it.
  • Finger foods: We got the go ahead to start Landen on some very small, soft finger foods and move to stage 3 baby food. I told Dr. Widelitz that we're nervous about this due to choking hazards but we're ready to give it a try. We have a list of things to start with and then we'll see how that goes and move on from there.
  • Meals: It's time to add a 3rd meal to Landen's feeding schedule and maybe some snacks here and there.
  • Formula: Landen is currently getting between 20 and 24 oz. of formula from bottles per day. He will continue to get about this same amount until he's one, even though he'll be eating more solids. The formula is important for the vitamins and minerals but it also provides the adequate amount of necessary protein. Until he's at least a year he won't be eating enough solids to get the amount of protein his body needs.
  • Gagging/throwing up: We told the doctor about Landen's new "trick" of gagging and throwing up when he doesn't like some baby foods. He kinda chuckled and said it's pretty normal. Just his way of letting us know he's not a fan of something.
  • Sippy and straw cups: I mentioned that Landen has no interest in drinking from a sippy or straw cup. Dr. Widelitz said to just keep offering it but it's nothing to be concerned with at this point. He mentioned that some kids end up preferring them as their teeth come in because the larger bottle nipple starts to get in the way.
  • Teething: Landen's top two teeth have move down enough so that they are pushing against his gums. You can see white caps easily. Dr. Widelitz confirmed that they are definitely about ready to come through. (Landen's been letting us know too. He's been in pain so we've given him Advil.)
  • Prevacid: It does not appear that Landen really needs his reflux medication anymore. We're going to try to wean him off of it and see how he does. If he starts to show discomfort again while he's drinking his bottles, we'll regroup.
  • Vaccinations: Landen only had to get one shot today - Hepatitis B. He whimpered a bit and started to cry but John got him distracted quickly so he was ok. When he turns 1 Landen is scheduled to get 4 vaccines - MMR, chicken pox, flu, and 1 more I can't remember. Since there are a couple he's never had before I'm going to ask Dr. Widelitz to give him 2 and then we'll take him back 2 weeks later for the other 2. I don't want to overload him system all at once.

Waiting to see Dr. Widelitz
