February 2nd – 17 months old!

Dear Landen,

Do you remember how we were concerned last month that you weren’t speaking much?  Well, this month we have definitely seen some progress!!  We still have some work to do but there has been a bit of a language explosion!  Here are some of the words and phrases you’

  • “ba” for ball and can identify them in books.  Saw a mini globe in the entertainment unit and identified it as a ball.
  • “sho” for shoe and sock.  (Like to try to put on Daddy’s gigantic shoe and sometimes Mommy’s.)
  • “st” for sit when you’re standing somewhere you shouldn’t (on the couch) but don’t usually sit down until we make you
  • Know “close” and help push doors/cabinets/fridge closed.
  • “now” for no (drawn out) instead of shaking your head when you know you shouldn’t do something.
  • “yogo” for yogurt
  • “cacka” for cracker
  • “coo-kee” for cookie, but have just recently started calling cookies crackers
  • “mo” and signing for more
  • “diap-uh” for diaper.
  • Puts hands up by face and says “ah-nah” when all food is gone. Lolo taught you “wah-lah-nah” which is the word in Tagalog.  We use both.
You have started using the “eat” sign when you’re hungry instead of “more”.

You’ve also become more vocal in different ways.  Sometimes you cry when we drop you off at daycare because you know we’re going to leave you.  It’s very sad but we know we need to go and you’ll be fine in a few minutes.   Also fun, you’ve developed this new screaming tantrum cry that is quite impressive.  You don’t use it frequently but it certainly gets our attention.  Two teeth on the top have come through and you seem to be working on the last 2 bottom teeth. There is lots of teething pain, which leads to a very cranky kid, which means more tantrums, crying, and refusing to eat …it’s been fun.

We attempted to have you drink your milk in a straw cup for the first time – you rejected it immediately.  We’re going to keep working on it though because we need to get you off the bottle.  If we ask if you want some yogurt you run to the refrigerator and grab the handle.  Once we open the door you try to open the drawer it’s stored in.  You now insist on holding a spoon while being fed.  If you don’t have your own you get quite upset.  You typically just stir with your spoon while we feed you with ours. You have finally started to eat meats and now like chicken strips, fish nuggets, and shredded pork.  Overall though, you’re still the Carbohydrate Kid.  You could live on breads, crackers, and cookies.

You love the slide that Mimi and Papa gave you for Christmas!  You can climb up the ladder on your own but you need a spotter when you sit down.  Sometimes you get your little hiney back to far.  You still love to push both your inside and outside lawn mower toys.  You absolutely love to watch Jake and Neverland Pirates on Disney Junior.  You will watch some of the other shows but not in the same way.  You are obsessed with touch-and-feel books but you have little interest in listening to a story.  We point to pictures and tell you what they are so now you have started pointing to pages of books too.

You can point to your nose, head, ears, and tummy.  Sometimes you point to your chest but it’s generally somewhere on your torso.  We’ve been going to a Saturday morning tumbling class.  It’s been fun seeing you run around and try new things.  We took you to the zoo for the first time.  You seemed a bit perplexed at what all the animals were but we had a nice time.  One very exciting for Mommy was getting to take you on the Dumbo ride at Disneyland for the first time.  You really enjoyed it and Mommy was thrilled to get to experience it with you.

As usual, big things are happening!  Daddy and Mommy often look at each other in disbelief at all the new things you magically seem to be able to do.  We’re so blessed to have you in our lives.  We enjoy every minute – even when you’re screaming and crying because we forgot to get you your own spoon when it was time to eat.
